Samsung Galaxy Note 9: specifications, price and date of sale

All about the new Samsung Galaxy Note 9

It was 2011 when Samsung revolutionized the phone market with the original Galaxy Note. And overnight, the mobiles changed forever. Initially ridiculed by its then huge screen of 5.3 inches, this phone created a whole category for himself (that of the phablets) and recovered to surprise of own and strangers the reviled stylus, which had been banished with the disappearance of the PDAs. Seven years later Samsung returns to the fray with its best Note to date.

The new Galaxy Note 9, which ends up being presented at a lavish event held in New York, aims to be a device open to the professional public, but also to fans of mobile photography and even video games. For this, it will make use of sensational hardware, but also reviews key aspects of the device such as the S Pen.

More power and autonomy

Samsung Galaxy Note 9

The more power, the higher the energy consumption. And if a larger screen is added, the need to introduce a high-capacity battery to cope with day-to-day demands is even more pressing. For this reason, Samsung has decided to provide the Galaxy Note 9 with a battery higher performance than usual. In total there will be 4,000 mAh to spend all day playing with the mobile, which with a screen of 6.4 inches and 2960 x 1440 pixels is the largest Note to date.

This huge surface has HDR support to enjoy the most advanced content and is manufactured using Super OLED technology, so it has an outstanding contrast and absolute black. Beyond leisure, it also allows the Galaxy Note 9 to unleash its full potential, and it should be remembered that this phone is especially prized by professionals for its ability to take handwritten notes and draw diagrams intuitively using the S Pen.

Samsung has equipped its new flagship with an advanced eight-core processor, so Android 8.1 (which will be upgradeable to Android 9) should go smoothly. It is very curious that there will be two RAM configurations since Samsung will sell the phone in variants with 6 and 8 GB of system memory. From the outset, Spain will remain the most advanced, since it has always been considered a very high-end telephone aimed at a particularly demanding public.

Something similar happens with the storage capacity, which may be 128 GB or 512 GB. The confirmed version for Spain is the second. In this way the phone will have no less than half a Terabyte of storage for applications and multimedia content, and that the ability to capture 4K of their cameras could put some users in trouble. As usual, microSD cards can also be used.

Also say for the most vicious that Samsung has reached an agreement with Epic, the famous American studio known for the video game Fortnite. Its long-awaited mobile version will enter beta this week, and owners of a Galaxy device (including the Galaxy Note 9) will be able to enjoy its download before the rest. The software exclusives jump well from the world of consoles to reach the telephone market.

Finally, we can point out two other remarkable features of this brand new terminal: water resistance with IP68 level and speakers tuned by the specialist AKG that make this Note the most sonorous to date.

The best camera is ever seen in a Note

Samsung Galaxy Note 9

If we have to talk about mobile photography, Samsung has very few rivals within the Android landscape. The South Korean company began to bet strongly on the cameras with the development of its own sensors several years ago, and the Galaxy Note 9 treasures its latest advances in terms of static image and video capture. And with that screen, we are in front of a mobile that invites us to boast of photos.

The rear camera of the Galaxy Note 9 uses the increasingly usual double sensor configuration, albeit with its own spin. With a total of 12 megapixels, it uses a sensor with an aperture of f2.4 and another one of f.15, so that it can adjust with great precision the amount of light of each photograph and combine with software several photographs to provide HDR effects improved at night.

It is not the only interesting benefit. Samsung, which also aspires to be a leading firm in artificial intelligence, has equipped its camera with a specialized processing software to detect the presence of fingerprints and dirt on the lenses, warning you when a photo can be blurred due to a dedazo. Moreover, it can also alert you if you notice that someone has blinked in a group photo.

The Galaxy Note 9 camera software also incorporates artificial intelligence processing to identify scenes and improve them as much as possible. In this way the photos you take will always be calibrated on the fly and without touching the manual parameters, since the phone itself will be responsible for detecting if you want to photograph your pet with a hamburger, taking care to mark the most appropriate setting to adjust brightness and contrast automatically.

The camera application, in any case, has a secret weapon. And this was not expected by anyone.

The pen is now a remote control

Samsung Galaxy Note 9

Just as the S Pen has accompanied the Galaxy Note since its inception, this practical accessory has not evolved much beyond providing more and more sensitivity to achieve a few strokes close to those of a real pencil. With the Galaxy Note 9, it also gains remote control functions.

As you read: the new S Pen allows you to control your mobile remotely. This is possible thanks to the integration of Bluetooth technology inside, which will allow us to take pictures by pressing a button (much more practical than putting a countdown if we want to leave the mobile out of reach), but also control YouTube without touching the screen and even pass the presentations of a PowerPoint file.

To achieve all this the S Pen now has its own battery, which is charged in a matter of seconds by simply keeping the pen inside the phone. It is also possible to use it to draw and launch applications without having to load it, exactly as with any previous Galaxy Note. This is an extremely interesting feature, considering that the Note 9 will be able to connect to projectors and monitors using a USB-C to HDMI adapter (and without a DeX expansion base, as it was up to now), making it practically a Pocket PC.

It should be noted that Samsung will open the functions of its new Pen S Pen to all interested developers. With this measure, the company expects more and more applications to support its remote control functions, which in turn should result in greater playful and productive potential.

Discover the Samsung Official DeX Dock for Galaxy S8 / S8 Plus

Possessing a Samsung Galaxy S8, I let myself be tempted by the purchase of the famous DeX dock which bears the sweet code name EE-MG950TB.

Official DeX Dock Test

Main Features

  • DeX EE-MG950TB Samsung Station
  • Compatible only Samsung Galaxy S8 / S8 +
  • USB smartphone connection C
  • HDMI port 4K 60Hz
  • 100 Mb / s Ethernet port
  • 2 USB ports
  • USB-C power supply

This Samsung dock is a very useful gadget that is used to connect a Samsung Galaxy S8 or S8 Plus to a monitor, keyboard, and mouse and use the smartphone as a desktop PC to manage files, use multiple applications, play games, watch movies, surf the internet and more.

The Samsung Dock has two USB 2.0 ports, an Ethernet port, an HDMI port and a USB-C port on the back.

USB 2.0 ports can be used to charge and connect external flash drives, etc., which is useful for transferring files quickly and efficiently.

The HDMI port is used to connect to a 1080p HDMI monitor. You can connect to monitors with higher resolutions, such as 4K, but the docking station does not support this resolution and will need to be reduced.

The use of the docking station and its configuration are simple and straightforward. You simply place the smartphone on the docking station and the DEX software automatically loads on the connected external monitor.

The keyboard and mouse can be connected to the docking station via the USB 2.0 ports or via Bluetooth on the smartphone using a compatible Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. You also have the on-screen keyboard option.

For games, this dock is excellent. I played games on the big screen and it was so much more entertaining and it allowed me to play games that I usually play on my phone screen on a big external screen but the games are limited because some games require a touch interface.

I used this docking station to surf the Internet, watch YouTube videos, send emails, listen to music, watch movies, transfer files and more, and the performance was excellent.

This added docking station with an external keyboard, monitor and mouse have turned my smartphone into a portable desktop computer that is reliable and feature-rich and adds a whole new dimension of use and capacity to my smartphone.

A few things to note with the Samsung DEX is the fact that no AC adapter or cables are included in the package (the S8 / S8 + quick charger/cables can be used with the Samsung DEX).

This Samsung DeX Dock is a marvel in that it handles perfectly multitasking. All together and very intuitive, practical and especially fast!
We can do almost everything on this dex (mail, gallery, internet, compatible applications).
This doc is also cooled by a fan and allows, of course, recharge the phone at the same time.
The only downside remains for me a fairly large price, more than 150 € but it’s the price you need to turn your S8 into a pocket computer!

Samsung: New ISOCELL 0.8μm image sensors for smartphones

Samsung ISOCELL Bright GM1GD1 4 600x406

Samsung Electronics announced two new 0.8 micrometers (μm) pixel image sensors, the 48 Megapixel Samsung ISOCELL Bright GM1 and 32 Megapixel ISOCELL Bright GD1.

As cameras have become a key feature of today’s mobile phones, smartphone manufacturers are being asked to incorporate multiple cameras into new models, while maintaining stylish design. With reduced pixel size, the new sensors provide greater flexibility in design, allowing camera manufacturers to create smaller units or incorporate more pixels into existing designs, and thus allow smartphone makers to maximize space utilization in minutes, without frames, smartphones.

The GM1 and GD1 sensors are based on the company’s latest pixel isolation technology – ISOCELL Plus – which optimizes performance for smaller pixel pixels, making them the ideal solution for today’s ultra-high resolution cameras. In addition, thanks to the Tetra cell technology, where four pixels merge to function as one to increase sensitivity to light, GM1 and GD1 provide a light sensitivity level equal to that offered by a 1.6μm pixel image sensor at 12 and 8 Megapixel analysis, respectively. In addition, the sensors support gyro-based electronic image stabilization (EIS) for fast and accurate image capture.

Real-time HDR has been added to GD1 for even more balanced light exposure, richer colors and detail in creating self-videos or streaming live video content even in low-light and high contrast environments.

Samsung ISOCELL Bright GM1 and GD1 are expected to be released in mass production in the fourth quarter of 2018.

It is worth mentioning that Samsung has first announced ISOCELL technology in 2013, which reduces color variations between pixels by placing a natural hurdle and allowing small pixels to achieve higher color fidelity. Based on this technology, Samsung introduced the industry’s first image sensor 1.0um-pixel in 2015 and the 0.9-pixel sensor in 2017. In June 2018, Samsung introduced an upgraded pixel isolation technology, ISOCELL Plus.

“Demand for very small, high-resolution sensors is growing, as smartphones are evolving to offer new and even more exciting experiences,” said Ben K. Hur, vice president of Marketing Systems LSI at Samsung Electronics. “With the introduction of Samsung’s ISOCELL Bright GM1 and GD1 0.8-m pixels, which are at the cutting edge of technology, we are committed to continuing to drive innovative advances in image sensor technologies.”

Samsung prepares the Galaxy Beyond X with six cameras and 5G

The new Samsung Galaxy S10 is expected to be launched early this year, with the latest rumors suggesting that announcements are likely to be made next February.

There is a general perception that after the loss of part of Samsung’s market share (won by Chinese manufacturers), the Korean company is determined to change the data with the models it will present in 2019. Everyone expects the upcoming Galaxy S10 is a major upgrade compared to Samsung’s recent models.

In fact, the Wall Street Journal reports that the company will present not three, but four models that will fit into the new Galaxy S series. Three of the devices will be the “classic” Galaxy S10 series and are expected to show during the Mobile World Congress.

However, the fourth Galaxy S device is interesting, which, according to the WSJ, will be released later in the spring of 2019 and will only be available in the US and Korean markets. Until now, this device is known only under the codename Beyond X.

WSJ information wants Beyond X to support access to 5G technology networks while incorporating a total of 6 camera sensors. Note that Samsung already launched the Galaxy A9 with four main cameras and a single camera over the screen. The Beyond X will apparently go one step further by offering a quadruple main camera and a dual front camera.

At the monitor level, the Beyond X is said to have a diagonal screen of 6.7 inches, while the rest of the Galaxy S10 will move from 5.8 inches (and the current S9) to 6.4 inches (slightly larger than S9 +). The cameras in the S10 mainstream range will range from three to five, front and rear, depending on the model.

Interesting is the fact that Samsung is considering adding to the S10 series models and rechargeable wireless charging capability to charge other devices or wireless accessories. It’s the first-time feature in Huawei’s Mate 20 Pro.

All the above, the Galaxy S10 and the Beyond X, will come along with the folding smartphone that Samsung has already brought to us. Indeed, WSJ notes that there is a strong possibility that the retractable device is called Galaxy Flex, but without giving any further information on it.
